August 27, 2018

Rycon Construction climbed the rankings advancing to #27 on the ENR Top Mid-Atlantic Contractors List (Delaware, D.C., Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia).

The Top Contractors list, published annually, ranks both private and publicly held general contractors based on construction contracting-specific revenue.

Rycon Construction, Inc., Pittsburgh's eighth largest general contractor, is following a couple major contracts across the state to open a new office in Philadelphia.

John Sabatos, president and Chief Operating Officer of the Strip District-based company, said Rycon recently opened a small office in Philadelphia as it pursues a couple of mall renovation projects in the market for PREIT, the publicly traded mall owner that also recently owned a couple of malls in western Pennsylvania.

It was a level of business that justified a permanent presence for the company, said Sabatos.

"The good thing about Philadelphia is we have clients there that ask us to do work for them a lot," he said.

Along with about $35 million in the pipeline with PREIT, Sabatos said the company also does work with Aramark, the food service provider, and has other prospects for work in the Philadelphia market as well.

The Philadelphia office is part of a growing territory for Rycon, which is expected to generate more than $100 million in business this year, following established offices by the firm in Cleveland, Atlanta and Fort Lauderdale.

The office starts with Ed Szwarc serving as an executive vice president leading Rycon in the region.

"It's been a nice way to expand our geographic spread," he said.

Now with 125 employees in Pittsburgh and a little more than 400 company-wide, Sabatos said Rycon's growth has also resulted in an office expansion at its headquarters at 3 Crossings in the Strip.

Along with its established headquarters at 2501 Smallman, Rycon has leased an additional 12,000 square feet of office space in the new building at 2545 Railroad Street, best known as the headquarters of Argo AI.
